Lesson 5: Clickers

Objective: Students will determine the meaning of unknown words through context clues.

NETS: 2 and 6

Materials:
· Sample passages (3)
· Interactive white board
· Highlighters
· Clickers

Prior Knowledge: Prior to this lesson students will already have learned what synonyms are.

Procedure:
Day 1
· Students will have paper copy of a sample passage in front of them, and there will be the same passage on the IWB.
· Students will skim through passage one, noticing the underlined words. These words should be unknown to most students so that they can learn how to determine meaning through context clues.
· Then, as a class, we will read through each sentence that has an unknown word in it.
· I will talk through how to highlight the context clues and how to gather meaning from them.
· I will then ask students to try to highlight the context clues in the next unknown sentence.
· We will continue to go through the first passage as a class.

Day 2
· Students will have a paper copy of sample passage two in front of them.
· In order to see which students are able to use context clues and decide which students need to work with the basic skills teacher, they will be using the clickers to answer a series of questions.
· First, students will skim through the passage. There will be seven words underlined.
· Then I will ask students to highlight the context clues for each word and in the margin write a brief definition for each word.
· Next, I will use the clickers to have to students respond with a multiple choice question asking for the definition or use for each word.

Day 3
· Students will receive a paper copy of sample passage number three, and there will be the same passage on the IWB.
· Students will then skim through the passage and underline words that are unknown to them.
· They will use the same strategies from days one and two to determine the meaning of unknown words.
· They will then come up to the board and walk through their thought process with the class.

Assessment: Students will be first assessed during day two of this lesson using the clickers for a quick check to see which students need more help. There will not be a formal assessment as this is one skill that will be incorporated into other reading and comprehension lessons.
